Consumer Investigation: Saving Cash At The Dollar Store

By Robin Taylor

Shopping season is in full swing, but before you head to the store to restock the supplies, there are some real deals that will help you save some cash.  But are the deals actually worth it?

Dollar stores are known for their deals on seasonal items, and Channel 6 news found plenty of them.

At Dollar Tree, pool toys were just a dollar.  At Walmart, inflatables were $2 and kid's goggles were $5.  Before you head to the box store to buy your school supplies, Channel 6's Consumer Reporter Robin Taylor suggested checking out the dollar stores.  She found stretchable book covers and pencil cups for a dollar, while at Walmart similar items cost twice as much.

"There's an awful lot of bargains here.  A lot of value and the way the economy is, I think we all have to cut back," said Kate Reaey.

Robin  also found deals on picnic supplies and lunch box staples like sandwich bags and ice packs which were much cheaper than standard stores.  But Robin warned, they were generic brands so she couldn't vouch for the quality.  That doesn't mean you can't find deals on name brand products.  Patrick Clark found what he was looking for for his car and it cost less than at Pep Boys or Auto Zone.

"Same thing, but much cheaper," said Clark.

Some dollar store deals are found year round, like party supplies, gift bags and greeting cards.  There are plenty of gift bags as well, selling for $1 to $3 less than at Walmart.

The same goes for kids socks.  The three pack looked almost identical, but was $2 less.

But not everything is an incredible deal.  Robin also checked out the prices on cleaning supplies.

While the Lysol Kitchen cleaner, the drain cleaner were much cheaper at Dollar Tree, Walmart had a better deal on Comet and Ajax.
