Contractor Concerns

Families Thinking Scam

Channel 6 spoke to two families, both in Beaverdale, Cambria County, who say they contracted work from Country Classic Home Builders and they say they aren't getting what they paid for.

Mary Cameron, who contracted work from Country Classic Home Builders, says, "We actually thought, wow, we're going to have a beautiful house and now it's just a nightmare."

Mary Cameron is talking about the new addition she and her husband wanted for their home. Construction began in June and she says she hasn't seen the contractor, Jim Hawes, since August ninth. The guy was basically doing the work and he ran.

Right now, their roof is tarped and incomplete; rain comes through, soaking insulation and dripping through the ceiling. Cigarette butts and garbage left on the floor.

Mary says, "I talked to an engineer and he said it's not safe."

Karen Holbash lives across town. She wanted Country Classic Home Builders to install windows, dry wall, and insulation. Karen says the work was begun, but much of the work still isn't complete. Now, both Karen and Mary are concerned they're getting scammed.

Karen says, "I'm saying stay away from him. If you started with him, get out while you can. Don't give him anymore money because he takes your money and runs."

Channel 6 spoke to Jim Hawes of Country Classic Home Builders over the phone Tuesday night. He contends Mary Cameron got the wrong permit for the work on her house. He tells Channel 6 when Mary gets the right permit for the new addition, he'll be glad to begin work again, but he says it's up to the homeowner to get the permit. However, Mary's husband says their contract proposal says, "The contractor shall, at its own expense, obtain all permits necessary for the work to be performed."

As for Karen, Hawes says the work is getting done, but he's having some problems with his employees.
