Controversial Goucher Street project discussed

By Lindsay Ward

Cambria County —

Senator John Wozniak spoke at Friday morning's State of the Commonwealth Breakfast in Johnstown. He directly addressed several concerns about a Penndot Road Project in the Westmont area; a project that has residents putting ribbons around trees on Goucher Street. Now, Wozniak made an announcement many have wanted to hear.

"It’s slowing down. There's going to be a number of public meetings yet. There might be some things that can be done but I think the public opposition was very loud, very organized and quite frankly coming from that part of the area I think there are things that can be done and things that don't need to be done," said Wozniak.

Part of that public outcry came from Westmont businesses such as Santos Pizza, located right off of Goucher Street.

"The businesses here obviously I think would know more about this street and what was happening and their just really wasn't any need for it,” said Santo’s Pizza owner, Tony Arcuri.

And residents like Elaine Lobb, who posted a photo of her dog on a tree saying, "save my tree."

"There is not a traffic or safety issue and happy to know that the public does make a difference," says Lobb.

So 6 News called the engineers at PennDOT to find out what happened. They say the project is not on hold, not slowing down and say it is moving forward.

PennDOT’s Assistant District Executive Designer Vince Greenland says, "It's obvious because of the misconceptions we're looking at how to communicate better. Our main focus is for people to understand what the project is."
