Convicted Sex Offender Missing From Megan's Law Website

Cambria County —

Convicted sex offenders are required by law to register with state police and let them know where they're living. It's designed to let the public know who's living near them, but at least one convicted sex offender in Cambria County never registered.

Convicted sex offender, Jason Kniss, of Johnstown, went to the state police barracks in Ebensburg Wednesday to register his name on the Megan's Law website. Last year, Kniss plead guilty to incest and statuatory sexual assault. He did his time at the Cambria County Prison and was released December 1st to house arrest.

Megan's Law requires convicted sex offenders to register and have their name, picture and hometown placed on the website before being released from prison, but Kniss never did so. A county probation officer said they were told Kniss did not have to register with Megan's Law because he was under house arrest and not on the street.

However, representatives at the Megan's Law office in Harrisburg, said Kniss should be on the website because he was no longer behind bars. The Megan's Law officer then contacted officials in Cambria County who in turn called Kniss and told him he needed to register.

A Megan's Law officer in Harrisburg says one of the positives of the website is that people will let them know if someone is not on the website that should be.
