Corbett Explains Reasoning for NCAA Lawsuit

By Gary Sinderson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

To understand the legalese involved, the Governor says the NCAA is a trade association that acted like a monopoly in unfairly penalizing not only Penn State, but also the citizens of Pennsylvania, who he's filing the suit on behalf.

Corbett says “Why would they do this? To benefit themselves.”

Corbett, a university trustee, says they wanted to wait until after football season to file the suit- that Penn State is not involved.

Corbett says, “Penn State was not invited. I briefed the board president and president Erickson.”

It’s an interesting perspective for Corbett. The NCAA sanctions came at the heels of the Freeh report in the Sandusky scandal. And Corbett told us last year he urged the university to hire Louis Freeh.

But now, its claimed the NCAA has overstepped its authority.

Jim Schultz, general counsel to the Governor, says, “This was a criminal matter. The NCAA has no right to be involved.”

While Penn State issued a statement distancing the university away from the lawsuit, the NCAA responded with a more direct approach--terming it meritless. Corbett ended his presentation when a question was raised about the continued political ramifications of the Sandusky scandal

Corbett adds, “On behalf of the citizens of Pennsylvania, the business here in State College and throughout Pennsylvania who are being harmed by this--this is why we’re doing this. This is not a political case.”
