Cresson State Prison workers meet with union

Members express frustration, fears

By Melanie Gillespie

CRESSON, Pa. —

Faces were filled with frustration at a union meeting Wednesday night concerning the imminent closure of the Cresson State Prison.

"I think everybody has the right to be angry," said Beth Sweet, whose husband works at Cresson.

There are still many unanswered questions, including where employees will ultimately end up.

Many union members say they're concerned about a survey they received that indicated workers will receive preference based on seniority.

"They gave it to us Monday [and] it has to be postmarked on the 22nd," said Joe Fox, the local union president. "For you to make a life decision for the rest of your life and we don't even know under what parameters."

The Department of Corrections has said many employees will be transferred to the new Benner State Prison in Centre County. Some workers at Cresson said that may not be an option for them.

"The housing market down there is expensive," Fox said. "People here have bought homes, invested in homes.

Sweet echoed that sentiment. "We'd have to pack up and move and leave my kids and my grandchildren and start all over," she said.

The union says it can't challenge closings, but it can bargain for its members.

Union representatives, along with state Senator John Wozniak, are invited to Harrisburg for a public hearing with the judiciary committee to get more answers. That meet is scheduled for Tuesday.
