Cresson workers speak out about prison closing

By Kerri Corrado

CRESSON, PA. —

A meeting was held to let SCI Cresson workers and the community voice their frustrations, opinions, and concerns regarding the closing of the prison.

Many people frustrated at Governor Corbett’s decision to close the SCI Cresson prison. Employees, as well as the community, gathered together to rally against the decision. They wanted their voices to be heard.

State Senator John Wozniak and other state representatives held this forum to let the community discuss the decision.

“ I think it is important to put a human face to this decision that is made in government,” Senator John Wozniak said.

Many wondering why they were blindsided by the decision.

“I got home from work one night and was eating dinner with my wife and family and my brother called and he had seen it on the news and he informed me of the closing,” Corrections Officer John Eckenrode said.

Employees say this decision is not only affecting their lives, but the lives of their family and businesses throughout Cresson. Some say they are faced with either moving their family or traveling hours to work.

The big question is, why this prison is being closed?

“Its frustrating because you can’t get answers from the governor’s office and they are coming to us looking for answers and so we are trying to get the governor to respond tonight,” State Representative Frank Burns said.
