JOHNSTOWN, Pa. --

Fire crews in Johnstown battled a three-alarm blaze that destroyed a former school early Tuesday.

The fire broke out at the old Maple Park School near the Solomon Homes.

The alarm went off just before 5 a.m. and it wasn't long before fire officials realized they needed more manpower than they had available.

Trooper Timothy Frew of the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's Office said arson is strongly suspected. The building has been vacant for a number of years.

"Without identity of the very first fuel and heat source, you can't identify it," Frew said, then added because of the "absence of utilities, it makes you think, 'Yes.' "
