Crews Drill Into Abandoned Jefferson County Mine

SYKESVILLE, Pa. —

Water inside an abandoned mine could turn into a water source for Jefferson County residents.

Crews have been drilling into the mine in Sykesville for more than week.

On Wednesday, they tapped into the Sykes mine, which was abandoned in the 1930s.

WJAC-TV was at the site Thursday just after crews finished drilling a second hole.

They allowed water to gush into the air after the hole was finished.

Officials said they would wait until the cloudy water became more clear before capping the well.

The mine water could be a new water source for Sykesville.

The borough currently buys its water off nearby DuBois.

Officials said it would take time to test the water.

They added that local fire companies and businesses have already expressed interest in using it.
