Crews Rescue Fisherman On Lake

By Rich Wisniewski

CURWENSVILLE,Pa —

The Curwensville Lake is known to be a fun spot, but on Monday morning, it was the scene of an emergency.

"We were dispatched at ten after seven for a report of two men who have fallen through the ice," said Curwensville Fire Chief  Travis Goodman.

Emergency responders say the men were roughly 300 yards out when they fell through the thin layer of ice that is covering the lake.

According to Goodman, another fisherman, who was on his way down to the lake saw the two men fall in the water and called 911.

"A majority of their body was submerged underwater except for their heads and their arms," he added.

The two men were able to get out of the water and were flown to local hospitals were they're listed in serious condition.

But given the rescue, emergency workers want people to know about the dangers of being on frozen lakes.

"The biggest thing is that you need to know what is underneath the ice at all times. You need to know the depth of the ice; the water temperature," he said.

Even though the weather is cold enough to freeze the water, that doesn't mean that the ice is solid. The Curwensville Fire Cheif says that big lakes, like Curwensville need at least several days of below zero temperatures in order for the ice to develope a solid foundation.

So the best bet is to stay off the ice.
