DA to decide if suspect will face death penalty in connection with fatal baseball bat attack

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

The Cambria County District Attorney said she will determine if a man accused of fatally striking his ex-girlfriend's son with a baseball bat will face the death penalty.

At a news conference on Wednesday, officials detailed the autopsy results and new charges in the case against Gregory Conzo.

Conzo, 50, is accused of striking 37-year-old Michael Pcola in the head with an aluminum baseball bat and causing Pcola's death.

The incident happened on Nov. 5 when Conzo was verbally arguing with his girlfriend, Lois Pcola, about a hearing he was scheduled to have for allegedly assaulting her. Police said part of Conzo's court order was that he should not have been at the house.

During the argument, Lois Pcola's son, Michael, came downstairs to try to stop the fight, then Conzo swung an aluminum bat. Police said Conzo first struck his own daughter in the arm, then hit Michael Pcola in the head.

Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski ruled that blunt force trauma from the baseball bat injury contributed to Pcola's death two days after the attack.

Tuesday night, Conzo was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide, and District Attorney Kelly Callihan said her next step is to make a determination about if this is a death penalty case.

The criminal homicide charge filed Tuesday night was one of eight new charges filed against Conzo, including two counts of stalking, aggravated assault with serious injury, aggravated assault with an assault weapon, simple assault, simple assault with a weapon and reckless endangerment.
