Dairy Farmers Lose In Fire

Bedford County —

Flames spread through the barn and milk parlor at Fair Farms Monday morning. The blaze killed 10 calves and left 54 without a home. The charred remains of the Fair's barn sat soaking in the rain Tuesday afternoon. Part of the debris was still smoldering inside what used to house the 54 cattle. The smell of fire still lingered.

The Fair family discovered the fire at their barn around 5am Monday. A number of fire companies showed up to put it out. Once extinguished, part of the shell is all that is left. With their milking station destroyed, the Fairs had no choice but to make a tough business decision. By Monday afternoon, the cattle were sold and off to Lancaster County. Owner, Ralph Fair, says even though they got money for the cattle, with no milk production, their business takes a hit. There was no way to milk the cows so they couldn't keep the herd.

The Fairs say they plan to rebuild and they have insurance. Fire officials are investigating the cause. The Fairs say they think it was electrical.
