Deadly Intersection Dedicated

Somerset County —

Melissa's Way is a chilling reminder of late July 1999, when Melissa Okinsky was killed on her 18th birthday.

"She left the house some 10-15 minutes before. She was happy; she was her normal bubbly self and it just couldn't be possible," says Melissa's mom, Pamela Okinsky.

A blind spot and a passing big rig devastated the Okinsky family. So they sought out to make this intersection safer. Because of several wrecks and at least three deaths, six years and two-point-seven million dollars changed this crossroads.

It's just our hope and prayer that it spares someone else the anguish we've gone through for the past six years, says Pamela.

As nice as this area looks, some neighbors say the road's construction was a waste of money and could cause more accidents than in the past. Neighbors say there is still a blind spot along the road and they feel now that the area has been opened up, dump trucks and tractor trailers will drive even faster through the area. They say they've witnessed several near accidents already.

"There are several things that maybe we would change if we could, but overall its more than we could have hoped for ever," adds Pamela.
