Death Penalty Sought Against Huntingdon County Man Accused Of Killing Wife

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a Huntingdon County man accused of killing his estranged wife in November.

John Gerholt is accused of shooting his wife, Karen, outside the Bedford County McDonald's where she worked.

Investigators said Karen Gerholt had a protection from abuse order against her husband. They said she was on a break outside in the parking lot when John Gerholt shot her to death.

The couple had three young children.

No other people were injured in the shooting, but District Attorney Bill Higgins said John Gerholt put others at risk by opening fire in public. That, combined with the violation of the abuse order, prompted Higgins to pursue the death penalty.

Gerholt was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday. He remains in the Bedford County Jail.
