Deer Hunting Season Opens With Cold, Rainy Day

About 750,000 hunters were estimated to head out to the woods on Monday for the much-anticipated start of Pennsylvania's 12-day deer hunting season.

Even though rain fell steadily across the Alleghenies, hunters were out before dawn with the hopes of bagging a buck.

Game officials said hunters are expected to kill about 85,000 deer on Monday alone, which is nearly 1/3 of the 300,000 deer that will be harvested over the course of the season.

Hunters said the rain had put a damper on opening day and said they hadn't seen many deer. Even so, they said they'll tough it out until they tag a doe or buck.

The state Game Commission is encouraging hunters to file their harvest reports through the agency's new online system, but hunters still have the option to do so via postcard.
