Detective: Dye pack may help find armed bank robber

By Lindsay Ward and  WJAC Web Staff

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Police are searching for a man who robbed a Cambria County bank at gunpoint in broad daylight over the weekend, and said a dye pack in the bank's money bag may help track down the robber.

The robbery happened at the S & T Bank on Scalp Avenue in Richland Township just before closing on Saturday. The robber wore a dark sweatshirt, sunglasses and a face mask as he pointed a gun at a bank teller.

Richland Police Detective Tom Keirn said putting a dye pack in the money bag was a smart move by the bank.

Keirn said the majority of the money that the robber made off with is now destroyed because of the pack, which not only burned some of the money but also colored it red.

The dye pack probably gave the robber quite a scare, Keirn said, because the explosion from one is not small, possibly burning the robber and most likely covering his exposed skin in red dye, which doesn't come off easily.

Keirn urged the public to contact police immediately if they come across any money with red dye on it.

"Caution the public that if you run into any of this money at a business or stores or wherever, please contact the police right away if someone is trying to use this dye-covered money," Keirn said.
