Detours And Delays In Johnstown

Detours and delays are on their way for anyone who uses the Route 56 ByPass to get from Johnstown to Route 219.

We spoke to quite a few people who travel Routes 56 and 219 and many of them say they aren't happy with the detours and construction, but they understand why it's being done.

If you live in Cambria County - it seems like you see construction everywhere you turn lately, but some of you have your own way avoiding the delays.

Brent Gough says, "I get here pretty early in the morning before the traffic starts and I leave late at night after everything is cleared through."

But some of you think the money going toward construction could be better spent.

"We have so many big buildings and we don't have a lot of jobs and they're just putting more and more money into construction when they need to be filling the jobs," says Tiasha Jones.

You'll start seeing major changes starting Monday when the Route 56 bridge - that crosses Route 219 closes and the detours begin. The project engineer for PENNDOT says - when traveling out of the city, you'll now take the 56 ByPass to 219 South - you'll get off at the Scalp Avenue Exit and get back on 219 North and when driving to the city - PENNDOT recommends taking 219 North - get off at the Galleria Drive Exit - cross over 219 - and loop around to the 56 West Expressway into the city.

Gloria Zambinini says, "It's annoying, but if you want progress you have to put up with a little annoyance and nuisance once in awhile."

Again - the Route 56 Bridge closes Monday and the project engineer for PENNDOT says construction is expected to be finished by the end of November of this year.
