Suspect charged with 2nd bank robbery during court hearing

By Maria Miller

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

A man accused of robbing a Johnstown area bank was in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing, but shortly after, more charges were slapped on for another bank robbery.

When Dion Wilt was arrested last week, he was only charged with robbing one bank, the AmeriServ branch in Westmont. While police had told 6 News there were many similarities between that case and the robbery at the First National Bank in Davidsville, police did not officially link him to it until Thursday.

"There were a lot of similarities," said Conemaugh Township detective Michael Popma. "Myself and the West Hills Regional Police Department looked at several film and still images and also spoke with other independent witnesses that brought us to the new charges. "

Those charges were not brought up during the hearing, as witnesses and evidence were brought in specifically for the AmeriServ robbery in Cambria County. But police showed video surveillance that they said shows Wilt inside a nearby Dollar General store just hours before the robbery. They also showed video from outside the bank that they said shows Wilt walking away.

"The surveillance video speaks for itself," said Cambria County Assistant District Attorney Joseph Green. "Just looking at the video, you can tell it is the defendant coming from the bank and going to the bank."

A local police officer and another man who have had contact with Wilt in the past both told the judge they know, without a doubt, that it was Wilt seen in the video robbing the bank. They said the clothing, stature and mannerisms all match up.

"It was mere speculation. I'd like to have those people give me the lottery numbers," said defense attorney Kevin Rozich. "I've been doing this a long time, and I've never seen anybody be able to identify someone with a mask, a hat and sunglasses on. I think that's a little bit ludicrous."
