Doctors expect to see cases of the flu for another 4-6 weeks

By Brittany Boyer

DuBois, Pa. —

The seasonal flu continues to spread throughout the United States.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health the flu is still widespread in Pennsylvania.

To date there have been 34,090 positive cases of the flu in Pennsylvania.

While the virus may not seem as active as it has been in previous weeks, doctors said we can expect to see outbreaks for a few more weeks.

"We have seen a decrease in cases, but the season is going to continue for another couple of weeks," said Dr. Gerald Smith of the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

Smith said at DRMC they have seen hundreds of cases of the flu this year.

"It's been worst definitely than last year. It was reminiscent of two years ago. We've seen a lot of cases. A lot of extremes of age, young and old," he said.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health reports of the flu remain above average.

For Pennsylvania hospitals, the busiest week was the second week of January.

Statistics show more than 570 people were hospitalized with the flu.

According to statistics, hospitalizations were down last week.  Hospitals statewide reported 111 patients were hospitalized with the flu.

"I think that the vaccine hasn't covered all of the strains that we've had. We've seen a lot of both types, both Influenza "A" and Influenza "B"," he said.

Doctors said they've seen patients who have received the flu shot and those who have not.

Smith anticipates that flu outbreaks will continue for another 4-6 weeks.
