JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

The weak economy and high unemployment has left more families in need this holiday season. The Saint Vincent de Paul Family Kitchen on Bedford Street in Johnstown is open every day for a hot meal, including Christmas day.

When 6 News stopped by the Family Kitchen on Thanksgiving day, we were told they had received their biggest crowd ever. And for Christmas day on Sunday, they said they won't be surprised if they see more than 500.

Christmas has already begun at the Family Kitchen . All weekend long, workers will be handing out gifts to everyone that stops by, as well as a bag of toiletries and a raffle ticket for a chance to win an even better gift. St. Gregory's Church in Johnstown is preparing the turkeys for Christmas dinner this year, but workers at the kitchen said they've been able to prepare a lot of the food themselves. That's because donations have been very plentiful. They estimate that they've received more than $15,000 worth of food, money and gifts for this holiday season.

"Overwhelming this year. We've had outpouring from the community," said Sam Grasso, the donation coordinator for the kitchen. "Keep it on coming because Christmas is all throughout the year. It's just not on Dec. 25."

Christmas dinner begins at noon Sunday and everyone is always welcome. If you'd still like to make a donation this year, you can stop by the kitchen or give them a call at 814-539-7811.
