Downtown Employee Reacts To Parking Garage Collapse

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

The Washington Street parking garage that collapsed early Tuesday morning has been very convenient for downtown employees. About 100 people lease spaces there, but until further notice, they will be walking from another garage at the corner of Vine and Walnut Streets.

WJAC spoke with the owner of George's Song Shop who has been parking in the garage for last 30 years. He said he knew there was some structural problems but never thought it would actually collapse.

According to John George, about four years ago the city closed the top two floors because it wasn't safe, but nothing else was ever done with the building.

"I thought it was okay," said George. "A lot of people moved out when they heard they had structural damage in 2005. I thought it was just so convienent to where I work that I decided I was going to stay."

George said he is very glad the collapse happened at 3 in the morning and not 3 in the afternoon. No one was hurt in the accident.
