Drivers Content With Gas Prices This Memorial Day Weekend

With many people hitting the highways for Memorial Day getaways, drivers at local gas stations said they're satisfied with the price at the pump.

Two summers ago, gas was creeping toward $4 a gallon. This year, people were filling up their tanks at a Sheetz station in Clearfield County for $2.75 a gallon.

Just ahead on Route 219 north of DuBois, another gas station was selling for $2.55 a gallon.

Officials with AAA said gas prices are a bit higher than last year, but they have stabilized and people are heading out on the road.

Officials said they expect travel to increase about 5 percent this year. At gas stations along Interstate 80 on Friday, there were vehicles from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and New York. Many people said they no longer think about gas prices when planning a trip.

John Courtney, of Downers Grove, Ill., said, "It wasn't even a consideration of ours. … It's cheaper to travel by car than fly anyway, so we decided this is the right thing to do."

Even though many people said they are satisfied with gas prices in Clearfield County, many people said they're concerned about any effect the oil spill off the Gulf Coast could have on gas prices.
