Easy Post-Holiday Home Repairs

If you've decorated for the holidays or hosted a party at home, chances are you’ll have some repairs to do. Good Housekeeping has come up with some simply, post-holiday fix-up tips.

“When it's time to take down your decorations after your guests are gone, you can find lots of holes left behind on your walls. Well, there’s an easy way to fix them and it’s with a product called Erase-A-Hole,“ says Carolyn Forte, Cleaning Products Director, Good Housekeeping Institute.

Erase-A-Hole is really just a little bit of spackle in an easy-to-use dispenser tube. Boost up a little of the paste from inside the container and apply it to the hole. Then just remove any of the excess with a damp cloth. It starts to dry immediately, and you can actually start painting it right away without even having to prime it.

If too many party toasts chipped your stemware, Good Housekeeping recommends the Chef’s Choice Crystal Crafter. It sands nicks and chips with just a light rubbing.

Another problem may be your stainless steel sinks. You can rectify that with the Siege Stainless Steel Scratch Remover Kit. "The kit comes with three pads, three double-sided pads with different levels of abrasiveness. In our tests, with just a few minutes of gentle scrubbing, our scratches were gone," says Forte.

And Good Housekeeping gives the Guardsman Furniture Stain Remover Cloth thumbs up for removing water and heat stains on furniture. “Just use the Guardsmen cloth. You want to rub in the direction of the grain of the wood until the stain disappears. Once it looks like the stain is gone, simply take a clean cloth and buff the entire top of the table,” Forte says.

And if you have stains on carpeting or upholstery that you can’t get out, you might try following the instructions at the Stain Buster tool on the Good Housekeeping Web site, www.goodhousekeeping.com. You can also learn more by checking out the January issue of the magazine.
