Eight Year Old Gives Back

By Rich Wisniewski

BROOKVILLE, Pa —

Eight-year-old, Mackenzie Byerly and her mom are organizing a clothing drive for the homeless. The drive is called "Help Mackenzie Warm the Soles."

The family got the idea when Mackenzie and her mom talked with a homeless shelter in Pittsburgh. They found out, that while shirts and pants are always needed, socks are the thing that is most desired. Because, if homless people don't have a  good pair of shoes to keep their feet warm, the next best thing is a solid pair of socks.

People are being encouraged to stop by one of the seven businesses in Brookville to drop off a pair of new or used socks. The socks will then be dropped off to a homeless shelter in Pittsburgh.

The dropoff points include:

  • Means Lauf Super Drug Store
  • Brookville YMCA
  • Brookville Library
  • Crayon Castle Day Care
  • Ferringer Flowers
  • First Church of God
  • Brookville Flower Shop

They will be collecting the socks until December 19.

Even though Mackenzie is only eight, her mom says that her daughter is always looking to help. In fact this is the third event shes done this year to try to help the homeless. Back in March she organized a food drive, over the summer she put together a dance, and now this sock drive. Given the fact that she has a heart of gold, Mackenzie remains humble when it's brought up. In fact, all she could give was a shoulder shrug when she was complimented.
