Elderly Hunter Lost In Woods For Nearly 24 Hours

By Brittany Boyer

BENEZETTE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A Blair County man will forever remember the first day of deer hunting season in Elk County.

Peter Steiner, 84, of Hollidaysburg was hunting with a group of friends on Monday when the group separated.

It wasn't until Tuesday afternoon when officials were alerted that Steiner had been missing.

Just after 12 p.m., a search and rescue began in Benezette Township.

On Tuesday, more than a dozen Elkland Search and Rescue members went searching for Steiner. They were joined by forestry  officials from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and even a few hunters.

6 News spoke with a few hunters who said they heard Steiner over the scanner.

Officials said they searched within a few miles of where they expected Steiner may have been.

Just after 3 p.m. Steiner was found in a parking lot along Beaver Run.

Officials said he walked about 4 miles carrying a sled with gear that weighed more than 50 pounds.

Steiner's sons told 6 News that their father lives for hunting season. They said that he has been hunting in the Quehanna Wild for 43 years.

Steiner told 6 News he was never scared for his life at any point.

He said Monday afternoon he took his medication and fell asleep under a tree.

When he woke up, it was dark and he could not remember from  which direction he had come.

Steiner was checked out by EMS crews, and they determined he was in good condition.

Steiner said he is happy to be out of the woods and back with his family.
