Elderly woman could face criminal charges after running into 2 buildings

By Maria Miller

SOMERSET BOROUGH, Pa. —

A car slammed through a Somerset County business injuring two workers inside on Thursday.

Over the weekend 6 News learned that same woman was involved in a similar accident just two days earlier when she ran into the side of a car dealership.

Scott Saylor, owner of Saylor Motor Company in Somerset, said Margaret Case, 88, ran into his building on Tuesday. Employees told 6 News Case was pulling out of the post office parking lot when they said she appeared to hit the gas, instead of the brake. They said Case told them something was wrong with her car and she was going to trade it in for a new one.

Just two days later, police said she crossed three lanes of traffic and continued through a parking lot and up over a curb, before slamming into Leiss Tool and Die.

"During the time that she drove down Uhl Street and ended up inside Leiss Tool and Die, we're estimating that her car went airborne at least three times," said Somerset Borough Police Chief Randy Cox.

Cox said the car has since been impounded but they're still working to figure out what caused her to lose control.

"We're in the process of pulling one of the computers out of the car which will give us some indications as to what actions the car was engaging in during the incident," said Cox.

The accident injured two workers, one seriously, and Cox said he intends to file several traffic citations.

"One of thing we're also considering in this particular case is criminal charges," said Cox. "Criminal charges have a much higher level of intent for us to prove and I'm not sure that we're able to show intent as far as recklessly endangering."

Cox said one of the injured workers has returned home, the other is still in a Pittsburgh hospital in stable condition after undergoing extensive surgery. Case remains at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center where she's listed in fair condition.
