Elderly Woman Dies In Apartment Fire

Indiana County —

Indiana County Coroner Mike Baker says 85-year-old Vera Barkley died of smoke inhalation and severe burns when her clothing caught fire while she was making dinner Sunday afternoon.

Officials say the fire started after 4 pm in an apartment attached to Brizzi's Candy and Nut Shoppe along East Market Street in Blairsville. Baker says Barkley tried to put out the blaze with water from her sink, but she was quickly overcome by smoke and flames.

Baker ruled Barkley's death accidental.
