Elderly Woman Dies In Fire

BLAIRSVILLE —

The Indiana County coroner says it appears an elderly Blairsville woman tried to put out her burning clothing before she was overcome by toxic smoke.

Coroner Mike Baker says 85-year-old Vera Barkley died from burns over 90 percent of her body and smoke inhalation. She was found by a friend Sunday afternoon in her apartment at the rear of the candy shop she owned. Baker says it appears her clothing caught fire while she was preparing food. Her death has been ruled accidental
