Elk Country Visitor Center continues to attract thousands

By Brittany Boyer

BENEZETTE, Pa. —

The Elk Country Visitor Center has been busy over the last two years.

The $10 million Gold LEED-certified center opened on Oct.6, 2010.

Now, nearly two years later, employees tell 6 News it has been busy.

Right now it's the prime viewing season for the elk, which means thousands of people from all across the world will make a trip to Elk County.

"September and October are definitely prime season.  The elk are amidst the rutting season, the leaves are turning, so scenery is beautiful, you can hear the elk bugling and they're more visible," said operations manager Carla Wehler.

Wehler said in 2010 they saw more than 55,000 visitors from October to the end of the year.

In 2011, she said they had more than 217,000 visitors.

So far this year, Wehler said there have been over 100,000 visitors and they expect to top last years numbers.

"Just this year alone we've already hit 100,000 and we're just hitting our busiest season coming up.  So, we're expecting to surpass last year," she said.

Currently, the Elk Country Visitor Center is open seven days a week 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
