Emergency Crews Warn Walkers: Stay On Trails

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

In the last month, fire crews in Stonycreek Township in Cambria County have had to rescue two young men who wondered off the James Mayor Trail and got themselves into trouble. Emergency officials told Channel 6 News it's becoming a dangerous trend that they want to put a stop to.

According to Riverside Fire Chief Jay Daniels, Monday night a 13-year-old boy was walking the path with his mother. He wanted to explore Buttermilk Falls and climbed 250 feet up the hillside. He fell 10 feet off a cliff, landing on rocks and hurting his leg. Rescue crews had to put him on a backboard and lower him to the ground using pulleys.

Daniels said with two similar incidents back to back, he is urging people to stay on the trail.

"I don't know whether the attraction is the falls or the cliff, but this is a very dangerous area," said Daniels.

Daniels said he hopes the township puts up signs in the area warning people to stay off the hillside. He fears someone could get really hurt.
