Emergency responders stress caution when using long trails

By Melanie Gillespie

EBENSBURG, Pa. —

Now that the warm weather is here to stay, local trails are getting a lot more foot traffic.

The trails are for recreational purposes, but as seen by the Dauntless Fire Department, emergencies can happen anywhere.

The 36-mile long trail runs from Cambria into Indiana County.

In the last few years emergency responders have had nearly a half a dozen medical emergencies and protecting yourself can be as easy as checking the weather.

The Ghost Town Trail gives runners, bikers and walkers 36 miles of steady surface from Ebensburg to Blacklick.

The trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail, but emergency responders know first hand that the unthinkable can happen anywhere.

"We've had in our area, about six medical emergencies, in the last couple of years. One was a fatal heart attack. We've had a couple cardiac emergencies, a diabetic emergency and a fainting spell," Ron Springer said.

Springer volunteers with Dauntless Fire Department in Ebensburg said every call is critical, but the terrain can make the response time difficult especially when it comes to cardiac arrest.

"We lose time and time is of essence. And so when we have to do CPR, and turn around and get those people back out and get them either transported to the hospital by ground or by air, our time frame of a success rate drops off critically."

Springer said if you plan on using the trail, there's ways to avoid a 911 call.

He said it's best to know the location where you entered the trail, carry a cell phone, travel in pairs and take any medication (like inhalers) with you to give self-treatment in case of a medical emergency.

"Make sure that your physical condition allows you to do that, and if not, obviously again as the medical professionals recommend, check with your doctor before you enter into some type of more strenuous exercise that you may not be ready to take on," Springer said.

Dauntless Fire Department also has an EMS jump pack and an AED machine in one of its mobile command truck.

Crews said they can also respond to as far as Nanty Glo on the trail if needed.
