An Emporium man will stand trial in connection with the killings of a popular Jefferson County couple.

After four hours of testimony Wednesday, a district court judge ordered 45-year-old Steven Rebert to be held for trial on murder, assault and burglary charges. Two new counts of robbery and theft were also bound over.

Rebert is accused of the April shooting deaths of James and Victoria Shugar. Both were 61 years old and were found in their home on Coal Tipple Road in Snyder Township, near Brockway.

Victoria Shugar had been the owner of a flower shop in downtown Brockway for years. She died of a gunshot wound to the trunk and James Shugar died of gunshot wounds to the neck and trunk, the coroner said.

According to investigators, Rebert has been linked to two homicide probes in New York. Authorities in New York said Rebert is a “definite person of interest” in the homicide investigations of Bill Fickel and Kevin Smith.
