Engineer Investigates Johnstown Overpass

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

An accident under the Fairfield Avenue overpass Monday has some questioning the safety of the Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge.

The company confirmed Tuesday that an engineer had been out that day looking at the structure and evaluated its safety. Some say an investigation is needed after a piece of concrete came crashing through the sunroof of a car, hitting the driver in the head.

Penndot officials said they've been in contact with Norfolk Southern about possible future work on the overpass. Penndot would provide traffic control on the roadway if needed.

Norfolk Southern officials said while they are looking into the incident, they want to stress that this may not be related to their bridge. There's actually two bridges side-by-side and they say the second one does not belong to them. Officials said there is also a possibility that someone may have thrown a rock off the overpass.

The driver did suffer a concussion when the rock came through his sunroof. He said he's not looking to sue or pocket any money from this situation. He just wants his car fixed.
