Faithful celebrate mass for Pope Benedict XVI

ALTOONA, Pa. —

History was made today as Pope Benedict XVI stepped down as leader of the Catholic faith.

“I am no longer the pope, but I’m still in the church,” he said. “I’m just a pilgrim who is starting the last part of his pilgrimage on this earth.”

Many people really didn’t know how to react to his resignation. After all, it’s something that hasn’t happened in over 600 years.

In our region, faithful young and old gathered at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona for a celebratory mass, led by Bishop Mark Bartchak.

"It’s a time of prayer for all of us to thank God for the gift of Pope Benedict and also to look to the future,” he said.

Like most people, Bishop Bartchak was shocked when the pope announced his resignation.

“It’s extraordinary because it just hasn’t happened in centuries,” he said.

Pope Benedict actually appointed Rev. Bartchak bishop. The two share a special anniversary.

“I was ordained bishop on April 19th. And April 19th was the anniversary of his election as pope.”

The two met each other twice; memories that are certain to last a lifetime.

The bishop says he believes that the future of the Catholic faith is bright.

“He left us with such encouraging words.”
