Family Cleaning Up After Huntingdon Co. Barn Fire

WEST TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Neighbors and fellow farmers assisted a Huntingdon County family with cleanup Thursday, after fire destroyed a barn and damaged a silo.

First responders from four counties responded to the massive barn blaze just after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Farm owner Curt Shilling told WJAC-TV Thursday that neighbors helped rescue Holstein calves out of the burning barn.

"There was probably about 125 in the barn, and we're probably going to lose less than a dozen,” said Shilling.

“We don't know for sure yet. We were pretty lucky and got most of them out."

Fast-moving flames that destroyed the barn also damaged a neighboring silo.

Lisa Shilling told WJAC-TV that once the contents are removed, the silo will have to be torn down.

During the second day of cleanup, the Shillings extended their thanks for help offered to feed, water and transport their cows.

“There's no feed facility or water,” said Curt Shilling.

“We've been carrying water down with trucks and we have a crew down there cleaning and moving cows, getting them feed and water."

A fire marshal investigating the barn fire doesn’t believe any foul play was involved.

The Shillings did have the barn insured and hope to rebuild.
