Family sues hospital, funeral home following body mixup

By Bill Wadell

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A Cambria County family has filed a lawsuit against a local hospital and a funeral home after the wrong body was released and transported for a funeral.

The Tribune Democrat reported Sunday that the family of Richard Tkacik filed the suit against Memorial Medical Center and the Harris Funeral Home, after they showed up for the viewing and were shown the wrong body in the casket, sparking a frantic search to find Tkacik’s body.

A hospital official declined to comment on the situation and the attorney representing the family has not returned an email from 6News.

Funeral home owner William Harris told 6News on Sunday night by phone that he was deeply upset by the incident, a situation that had never occurred in his three decades in business.

Harris offered his condolences for undue stress and grief to the family.
