WINDBER, Pa. —
"We're basically a month late in planting," said Joel Weaver, a partner at Grandma's Produce in Windber.
Weaver said, because of heavy rains, some crops have mildews and diseases to fight.
"We just can't cure some of the crops that we normally would have," Weaver said.
Despite all of the hard work put in by Weaver and his family, he said Mother Nature just hasn't wanted to give in.
"The broccoli and cauliflower will be later and the sweet corn with definitely be late July, maybe even early August until we get some of that," Weaver said.
At Grandma's Produce, the corn is usually knee-high by this time of year, but it's just starting to grow now.
For the Weavers and many other local farmers who depend on income from weekly markets, it's a big financial blow.
"We're losing a month's worth of marketing. People don't double buy in July just because we didn't have it in June. So, when we only market four months out of the year anyway, we're losing a third of the market, so you're losing a third of your income for the year," Weaver said.
Though the tables may look sparse now at farmers' markets, Weaver encouraged people to still come and shop locally because eventually people will see the bounty of the season.
"We have some of the pre-planted stuff like the strawberries -- they'll be coming in more next week -- but we've got the lettuce and the radishes, the green onions and garlic," Weaver said.
