Fatal Johnstown apartment fire remains under investigation

By WJAC Web Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A state fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a mother in a Johnstown apartment on Sunday.

The coroner said 26-year-old Crystal Thomas died in the blaze.

The fire broke out in Building B of Oakhurst Homes around 4 p.m. Sunday. Officials said Thomas was the only person in the apartment at the time.

Cambria County coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said Thomas had apparent smoke inhalation and burns. An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon.

Johnstown's fire chief said most of the damage done to the apartment was heat-related and said the fire started in the living room area. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly and an apartment next door suffered minor smoke damage.

Neighbors said Thomas was new to the area – she had only lived there for a few months – and they knew little about her. Neighbors said Thomas kept to herself most of the time.

Neighbors also said Thomas had a son but he did not live with her.
