Fire burns old Johnsonburg Hotel

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. —

For over 100 years, the Old Johnsonburg Hotel has stood on East Center Street in Johnsonburg. Over the last few years, it has sat abandoned. On Thursday, it was occupied by fire crews.

On Thursday morning around 9, firefighters responded to a call at the hotel. When they arrived at the scene, they saw smoke coming out of the second and third floor windows.

"When I walk outside between Smith Motors and the hotel, I look up and, holy smokes, the hotel's on fire again," said Steve Smith, who made the call that the hotel was on fire.

This is the second time in a year the hotel was on fire. Firefighters say they responded to a fire call almost six months ago. That call was believed to be arson, and according to firefighters, so is this one.

"All the utilities are off in the hotel. The hotel hasn't had any occupants in years. So since there was no gas or water, it's a very good indication that it was intentionally set," said Bob Dickey of the Johnsonburg Fire Department.

There were no injuries, and the fire was put out in about 15 minutes, the chief added. But the main concern right now is figuring out if it was arson, and how to stop what would be the third arson in Elk County this month.
