Fire claims the life of one women

By Kerri Corrado

JOHNSTOWN, PA. —

Flames turned fatal at one home in the west end of Johnstown. It happened at an apartment in the B building at Oakhurst homes.

“We have a young lady that passed away from the fire and we will do an autopsy tomorrow morning to determine the cause," Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said.

Neighbors say the woman was new to the area and has kids. They say the kids did not live with her. Neighbors recall the moment they knew something wasn’t right.

"We smelled smoke. I made a phone call to my boy Jeff and he he smelled the smoke," Oakhurst resident Eugene Elderkin said.

Conan Stiffler says he saw the fire trucks pull up as flames were shooting from the apartment.

" It was mostly smoke and a little fire when they got the fire out mostly black," Stiffler said.

We were told no one else was in the home at the time of the fire. Fire crews are still working to determine a cause as the investigation continues.
