Fire destroys 19th-century Somerset Co. home

LAVANSVILLE, Pa. —

A Somerset County home dating back more than 150 years was destroyed by fire Sunday morning.

The Lavansville home, built in the 1850s, was quickly consumed by smoke and flames due to the age of the structure. Officials said it was newly remodeled and a family of five lived there

The family -- Jeff and Lisa Richards and their three children -- were not home at the time of the fire. The family's 14-year-old dog Sam was inside the home and did not survive the fire.

Betty "Dolly" Frazier, 82, said it was a terrifying moment to see her neighbors' home in flames, but also heartbreaking.

"(We have) long memories of that house because my husband was born in that house," Frazier said.

Just a few steps away from Jeff and Lisa Richards' home, and seeing her own house melt from the heat, Frazier thought her home would be next.

"I was shaking … and crying because the flames were coming up and it was coming up and over and I thought it was going to take my house," said Frazier.

According to Frazier, Lisa Richards said the family still considers themselves very lucky because the family is alive and that's what's important.

As of Monday morning, there is no word on what led to the blaze, but a state fire marshal said it's not suspicious.

More than $100,000 worth of damage was done.
