Fire Destroys Blair County Home

A fire in Altoona on Tuesday sent one firefighter to the hospital and destroyed a home.

The Altoona Fire Department received a call around 9:40 p.m. notifying them about a blaze at a Beale Avenue home. It took until 3 a.m. to completely control the fire, crews said.

A deputy fire chief said crews called in 10 additional firefighters because of the low temperatures. He said they were concerned that firefighters who started battling the blaze might be at risk for exhaustion.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital after he reported difficulty breathing. He was treated and released.

Four pet dogs died in the fire, and the owner of the home is staying with relatives.
