First Services Held After Fire Destroys Cambria County Church

GALLITZIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Just one week after fire destroyed their church building, the congregation of St. Joseph's Church came together to worship.

They packed the church's social hall and were joined by several members of the Ashville Volunteer Fire Department.

Just one week ago, those firefighters fought to save the church's 100-year-old building.

"We were just nine days away from the 100-year anniversary," said Fr. Brian Saylor. "But we were able to save many items from the fire."

Those items were displayed at Sunday's service.

Church officials said the church means a lot to the community and to the congregation.

"For many of them, this is the only church they know," Saylor said. "They were baptized, married and have parents buried here."

Saylor added that because the congregation is strong they'll pull through this tough time.
