Fisherman rescued in local river

By Lindsay Ward

Johnstown, PA —

A man was fishing Wednesday morning between the Stonycreek and Conemaugh rivers in Johnstown when he fell in. Emergency crews rushed to save him.

John Boburchuck, a Johnstown firefighter, helped Robby Gutilla get out of the water.

"He was right above the low-head dam fishing when he lost his footing fell in and went over the low-head dam he got thrown out,” says Boburchuck.

"The Point" is where the Conemaugh and Stonycreek rivers meet, and where Gutilla fell. Officials say that area can have rough water.

"We called in when he got stranded on that island and there was no way for him to get out due to the current," says Sgt. Patrick Goggin.

As soon as he was pulled out of the boat, Gutilla was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Center.

Although the 51 year old was not injured, and in the water for about thirty minutes, officials tell 6 News the ending could have easily gone the other way.

"You definitely don't want to fish anywhere near those low-head dams they're just so dangerous and people don't understand the dangers in moving water you can see that every day when it's flooded roadways and people try to drive their car through," says Boburchuck.
