Flight returns to University Park Airport after gear problem

By The Associated Press

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

Airport officials say a small commercial plane safely returned to an air field near Penn State after it experienced landing gear problems.

United Airways Express Flight 5017 had just departed the University Park Airport on Wednesday afternoon bound for Washington, D.C. when the plane's landing gear wouldn't retract.

Airport officials say the plane's pilots checked the equipment and found it was safe to land, then turned around.

Associate airport director Ed Foster tells the Centre Daily Times there were 36 passengers on board.
