Flood Anniversary Events

Cambria County —

On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam, near Johnstown, broke loose, sending a wall of water rushing through the Conemaugh Valley. The massive flood left over 2,200 victims in it's wake. For those who would like to learn more about the 1889 flood, there is to be free admission to the flood museum in Johnstown Tuesday and the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, at 4:07 pm, the exact time the wave first hit Johnstown, officials are to dedicate a historic marker along with a memorial grove at the festival park along Johns Street in Johnstown.

In addition to that dedication, there are to be two special programs at the Johnstown Flood National Memorial in Saint Michael. From 11 am to 3 pm, there is to be a program focusing on the doomed efforts to save the dam before it broke. Beginning at 3 pm, officials are to commemorate the exact time the dam broke and read first-hand accounts from survivors. Admission to the national memorial is free Tuesday.

Finally, beginning at 6:30 Tuesday night at the memorial, officials are to hold the lighting of 2,209 luminaria to remember those who died in the flood.
