Flood Watches In Effect Throughout Alleghenies

With heavy rain expected and melting snow, emergency officials are keeping a close eye on rising waters and a flood watch is in effect into the weekend for many parts of the Allegheny region.

Even though snow has melted at a steady pace this week, rain could cause flooding in many areas.

Latest Severe Weather Alerts

Public works employees in Somerset Borough said they are making sure all of their catch basins are free so the water has a place to go. Leaders are also sending out warning letters to residents who live in flood-prone areas to be prepared for the weather this weekend.

Some residents already reported water leaking into their homes on Friday just from the melting snow. Experts said there are ways to protect personal property from water damage, including:

- Move items in the basement to higher ground

- Raise your furnace

- Inspect a flooded appliance before using it

- Keep emergency items handy, like a battery-operated flashlight and radio, water, non-perishable food, and copies of important documents and medication.

Natural gas companies also said they want to make sure customers are on alert because companies might turn off gas if flooding becomes a problem. Customers should call their natural gas provider if water covers their gas meter and they should shut off the valve to keep water out the piping.
