Food, Clothing Drive Supports Homeless Veterans

After serving in the military, many veterans struggle transitioning back to civilian life and find themselves homeless. An area auxiliary group has pledged to support a shelter that keeps these veterans off the street.

The Barnesboro American Legion Auxiliary Post 508 held a clothing and food drive over the weekend for Tomorrow's Hope, a shelter in Coalport that helps homeless veterans find a new home and a job. The auxiliary group has collected quite a few items but is looking for more donations to help the shelter.

"It is so important because they served our country, and to be able to give a little bit back to them and get them started on their feet again; it is a good cause for us," said Shelby Sifford, Barnesboro American Legion member.

The group is organizing a family event at the shelter on July 8th and plan on giving the veterans the donations at the event.

According to the U.S. Interagency Council on the Homeless, nearly 25 percent of the homeless population are veterans.

Anyone who is interested can drop off donations at the Barnesboro American Legion on Maple Avenue in Northern Cambria, Monday through Friday anytime after 3 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday anytime after noon. For information on how to make a monetary donation, contact the legion's president, Cathy Myers, at 814-743-6358.
