ALTOONA, Pa. --

The former Bon Secours Hospital in central Pennsylvania will close by the end of March as part of an ongoing consolidation by the Altoona Regional Health System.

According to The Associated Press, the system's chief operating officer said the hospital must close all at once because its license with the state requires it to offer all acute-care services -- including an emergency room, operating room, and intensive care -- to remain open.

The hospital is now referred to as the Seventh Avenue Campus of the Altoona Regional Health System. It's being closed because more services are being consolidated at the Altoona Hospital Campus.

The former Bon Secours Hospital averages about 40 inpatients and 32 emergency patients a day, about half as many as when it merged with Altoona Hospital in 2004.
