Former Football Star Pleads No Contest; Mistrial Nearly Declared

Related

The assault trial of a former Penn State University football star ended almost as soon as it began this morning in a Centre County court.

Scott Paxson pleased no contest Wednesday to one count of disorderly conduct after the judge reprimanded prosecutors and nearly declared a mistrial.

The judge had warned the district attorney's office not to mention Paxson's past charges, but prosecutors did just that in opening statements. At that time, the judge ordered prosecutors to either cut a deal with Paxson or he would declare a mistrial.

A jury of three women and nine men had been seated to hear the case.
